The LEAVE IT command pauses your dog before they make a bad decision. Taught positively, LEAVE IT can redirect your dog’s attention when something is unsafe for them to eat or inappropriate for them to engage.

Practice with a variety of lower value things to leave. Can your dog leave a tennis ball? A fluffy toy? A piece of hot dog?

The key to teaching leave it is to always reward with a higher value treat or even toy, in the beginning, so that your dog learns he may will get something more enticing whenever he listens!

Most important, the LEAVE IT command shouldn’t feel like you’re nagging your dog to NOT do something… Think of it as a fun game, so your dog remains excited about what you’re giving them instead.

The overall goal with dog leash training is to teach them that they can have the freedom to explore their world on a loose leash.

Start training a dog to walk on a leash by having high-value treats and nowhere to go. Train in your backyard or even inside your home with no distractions.

Outside can be much more challenging with the overwhelming sights, sounds, and smells that distract your dog.
